What is Prosthodontics?

Prosthodontics is a dental specialty that is devoted to the restoration and maintenance of oral health, function and aesthetics (cosmetic appearance) through the reconstruction of compromised teeth and the replacement of missing teeth, and oral and maxillofacial tissues.

This branch of dentistry encompasses a wide range of prosthodontic treatment techniques – which can be collectively described as “reconstructive, aesthetic or cosmetic and implant dentistry”. At Perth Prosthodontics, we offer a range of prosthodontic treatments including:

What is a Prosthodontist?

WA prosthodontist is a dental specialist who focuses on “reconstructive, aesthetic or cosmetic and implant prosthodontic treatments”. To become a prosthodontist, you must complete a minimum of three years of full time formal advanced specialist prosthodontic training (beyond the Bachelor degree of a general dentist) at a university postgraduate program, leading to a Masters or Doctorate degree in Prosthodontics.

Why see a Prosthodontist?

Prosthodontists are considered THE ARCHITECTS of the dental treatment plan, who regularly lead teams of general dentists, dental specialists and other allied health professionals to develop treatment solutions for your specific dental needs.

Whilst general dentists can provide many dental procedures for their patients, the level of complexity and challenging demands in some clinical conditions may only be adequately managed by dental specialists.

Did you know –

While there are many common terms for prosthodontists, such as “Cosmetic Dentists”, “Smile Makeover Dentists”, “Implant Specialists” and “Implantologists”, they are not recognised in Perth by the Dental Board of Australia as a formal dental specialty. “Cosmetic Dentistry”, which involves dental work such as ceramic or porcelain veneers, tooth whitening procedures and the improvement of smile / teeth appearance – actually falls within the scope of prosthodontics.

With rigorous training and a good comprehension in state-of-the-art techniques and latest research evidence based dental procedures, the Dental Board of Australia recognises a Prosthodontist as the leading specialist who is devoted to restoring and maintaining dental health, function (eating and speech) and aesthetic (cosmetic) needs.

Our Philosophy and Consultation Process

In order to understand your specific dental needs, an initial consultation with our prosthodontists is required. This consult will consist of a comprehensive dental examination where the collection of necessary diagnostic information (i.e. clinical photographs, dental casts and x-rays) is required in order to understand your specific dental needs. Based on this diagnostic assessment, your prosthodontist will discuss with you the clinical findings and diagnoses, various treatment options, treatment sequence and timing, limitations and potential complications and provide you with an estimate of treatment cost on the day of your initial consultation.

For more complex cases, additional appointments may be required for a more in-depth treatment discussion, a diagnostic wax up with physical or digital mock ups will also be performed. This allows us to have better visualization and communication of the proposed treatment result.

We do not believe in prescriptive treatment for our patients, which can lead to overtreatment with unnecessary procedures at a higher financial and biological cost. We believe in saving your teeth through restoration and preservation if their long-term prognoses are determined sound. Advanced knowledge and specialised skills are required to pursue this challenging goal, and patients should not resort to extraction (tooth removal) and prosthetic replacement unless this path is explored.

Rest assured, at Perth Prosthodontics, we strive to provide the least invasive, most functional and aesthetic (cosmetic) solution that is customised to suit each individual’s dental needs and budget.
